Seeking Refuge from Hateful Things

1
allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min hayajāni al-hirṣi
O God, I seek refuge in Thee from the agitation of craving,
2
wa sawratil-ghadab wa ghalabatil-hasad wa ḍaʿfil-ṣabr
the violence of wrath, the domination of envy, the frailty of patience,
3
wa qillatil qana'ati wa shakasatil khuluq
the lack of contentment, surliness of character,
4
wa'ilhāḥi al-shahwati, wa-malakati al-ḥamiyyah
urgency of passion, the disposition to vehemence,
5
wa mutābaʿati al-hawā, wa mukhālafati al-hudā
following caprice, opposing guidance,
6
wa sinati al-ghaflah, wa ta'atii al-kulfah
the sleep of heedlessness, undertaking the toilsome,
7
wa ʾīthāri l-bāṭili ʿalā l-ḥaqqi wal-iṣrāri ʿalā l-maʾṯami
preferring falsehood over truth, persisting in sin,
8
wa-istiṣghāri al-maʿṣiyati, wa-istikhtāri al-ṭāʿati
making little of disobedience, making much of obedience,
9
wa mubāhāti l-mukthirīna, wa al-izrāʾi bil-muqillīna
vying with the wealthy, distitleging the poor,
10
wa suu'il-wilāyati liman tahta aydeena
guarding badly over those in our hands,
11
wa tarqil shukri limani istana'a al-'arifata 'indana
failing to thank those who have done good to us,
12
aw an naʿḍuda ẓāliman, aw nakhẓula malhūfan
aiding a wrongdoer, abandoning someone troubled,
13
aw narooma ma laysa lana bihaqqa
wanting what is not rightfully ours,
14
aw naqūla fī al-ʿilm bi-ghayr ʿilm
and speaking about knowledge without knowing.
15
wa-naʿuẓu bi-ka an nanṭawiya ʿalā ghishshi aḥad
We seek refuge in Thee from harbouring dishonesty toward anyone,
16
wa'an nuʿjaba bi-aʿmālinā, wa namudda fī āmālinā
being pleased with our works, and stretching out our expectations.
17
wa naʿūḏu bika min suu'i al-sarīra, wa-iḥtiqāri al-ṣaghīra
We seek refuge in Thee from ill-mindedness, looking down on the small,
18
wa'an yastahwizu 'alayna ash-shaytan
Satan's gaining mastery over us,
19
'aw yankubanna al-zamanu, 'aw yatahadhamana al-sultanu
time's afflicting us, and the sovereign's oppressing us.
20
We seek refuge in Thee from acting with prodigality and not having sufficiency.
21
wa naʿūdh bi-ka min shamātati al-aʿdā'i wa min al-faqr ilā al-akfāʾi
We seek refuge in Thee from the gloating of enemies, indigent need for equals,
22
wa min maʿīshat fī shiddah wa maytah ʿalā ghayr ʿuddah
living in hardship, and dying without readiness.
23
wa naʿūdhu bika min al-ḥasrat al-ʿuẓmā
We seek refuge in Thee from the most dreadful remorse,
24
wa-al-muṣībat al-kubrā, wa-ashqā al-shaqā' wa-sū'i al-māb
the greatest affliction, the most wretched wretchedness, the evil end to the journey,
25
wa hirmāni althawābi, wa ḥulūli alʿiqāb
the deprivation of reward, and the advent of punishment.
26
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household
27
wa'a'ithni min kulli dhalika bi rahmatika
and through Thy mercy, give to me refuge from all of that,
28
wa jamiʿa al-mu'minīna wa al-mu'mināti
and to all the faithful, both men and women!
29
yā ʾarḥama l-rāḥimīn
O Most Merciful of the merciful!
