In Praise of God

1
al-ḥamdu lillāh
Praise belongs to God,
2
al-awwali bilā awwal kāna qablahu
the First, without a first before Him,
3
wa al-ākhir bilā ākhir yakūnu baʿdahu
the Last, without a last behind Him.
4
al-ladhi qasurat ʿan ruʾyatih abṣāru al-naẓirīn
Beholders' eyes fall short of seeing Him,
5
wa ʿajazat ʿan naʿtihi aw'ham-ul-waṣifīn
describers' imaginations are not able to depict Him.
6
ibtada'a bi qudratihi al-khalaqa ibtidā'an
He originated the creatures through His power with an origination,
7
wa-ikhtaraʿahum ʿala mashyyatihi ikhtirāʿan
He devised them in accordance with His will with a devising.
8
thumma salaka bihim ṭarīqa ʾirādatihi
Then He made them walk on the path of His desire,
9
wa baʿathahum fi sabili mahabbatihi
He sent them out on the way of His love.
10
lā yamlikūn taʾkhīran ʿan mā qaddamahum ilayh
They cannot keep back from that to which He has sent them forward,
11
wala yastateeʿoona taqadduman ila ma akhkharahum ʿanhu
nor can they go forward to that from which He has kept them back.
12
wa jaʿala li-kulli rūḥin minhum
He assigned from His provision to each of their spirits
13
qu-tan ma'luman maq-su-man min riz-qi-hi
a nourishment known and apportioned.
14
lā yanqusu man zādahu nāqisun
No decreaser decreases those whom He increases,
15
wa lā yazeedu man naqasahum zāʾidun
no increaser increases those of them whom He decreases.
16
thumma ḍaraba lahū fīl-ḥayāti ʾajalan mawqūtan
Then for each spirit He strikes a fixed term in life,
17
wa naṣaba lahū ʾamadan maḥdūdan
for each He sets up a determined end;
18
yatakhaththau ilayhi bi-ayyami ʿumurihi
he walks toward it through the days of his span,
19
wayarhaquhu bi-aʿwami daḥrihi
he overtakes it through the years of his time.
20
ḥattā ʾiḏa balagha ʾaqṣá ʾatharih
Then, when he takes his final step
21
wa astawʿaba hisaba ʿumurihi
and embraces the reckoning of his span,
22
qabḍuhu ilā mā nadabahu ilayh
God seizes him to the abundant reward
23
min mawfūri thawābihī aw maḥḏūri ʿiqābihī
or the feared punishment to which He has called him,
24
liyajziya allaḏīna ʾasāʾū bimā ʿamilū
"That He may repay those who do evil for what they have done
25
wa yajziya alladhina ahsanu bil husna
and repay those who do good with goodness" (53:31),
26
ʿadlan minhu taqaddasat asmāʾuhu
as justice from Him (holy are His names,
27
wa taẓāhara al-aʾuha
and manifest His boons).
28
lā yus'al ʿammā yafʿal wa hum yusʾalūn
"He shall not be questioned as to what He does, but they shall be questioned" (21:23).
29
wa-l-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī law ḥabasa ʿan ʿibādihī maʿrifatahā
Praise belongs to God, for, had He withheld from His servants the knowledge
30
ḥamdihi ʿalā mā ablahum min minanihi al-mutatābiʿah
to praise Him for the uninterrupted kindnesses with which He has tried them
31
wa-asbagha ʿalayhim ramin niʿamihi al-mutazahira
and the manifest favours which He has lavished upon them,
32
latasarrufu fi minanihi falam yahmaduhu
they would have moved about in His kindnesses without praising Him,
33
wa tawassaʿū fī rizqihim fa lam yashkurūhu
and spread themselves out in His provision without thanking Him.
34
wa law kānū kadhālika lakharajū min ḥudūd al-insāniyyah
Had such been the case, they would have left the bounds of humanity
35
ʾilā ḥaddi l-bahīmiyyah
for that of beastliness
36
fakānū kamā waṣafa fī muḥkam kitābihi
and become as He has described in the firm text of His Book:
37
('in hum illa ka'l-an'am, bal hum adallu sabila)
"They are but as the cattle—nay, but they are further astray from the way"! (25:46)
38
wa al-ḥamdu lillāh ʿalā mā ʿarrafanā min nafsih
Praise belongs to God, for the true knowledge of Himself He has given to us,
39
wa alhamanā min shukrihī
the thanksgiving He has inspired us to offer Him,
40
wa fataḥa lanā min abwābi al-ʿilmi bi rubūbiyyatihi
the doors to knowing His Lordship He has opened for us,
41
wa dallanā ʿalayhi min al-ikhlāṣi lahū fī tawḥīdihī
the sincerity towards Him in professing His Unity to which He has led us,
42
wa jannabana mina al-ilhadi wa alshakki fi amrihi
and the deviation and doubt in His Command from which He has turned us aside;
43
ḥamdān nuʿammaru bihī fīman ḥamidahu min khalqihī
a praise through which we may be given long life among those of His creatures who praise Him,
44
wa-nasbiqu bihi man sabaqa ila ridaahi wa'afwih
and overtake those who have gone ahead toward His good pleasure and pardon;
45
ḥamdan yuḍī'u lanā bihī ẓulumāt al-barzakh
a praise through which He will illuminate for us the shadows of the interworld,
46
wa yusahhilu ʿalayna bihi sabila al-mabʿath
ease for us the path of the Resurrection,
47
wa yusharrafu bihi manazilana 'inda mawaqifi al-ashhad
and raise up our stations at the standing places of the Witnesses
48
yawma tuʾjzā kullu nafsin bimā kasabat wa hum lā yudhlamūn
"on the day when every soul will be repaid for what it has earned - they shall not be wronged" (45:21);
49
(yawma lā yughnī mawlān ʿan mawlān shayʾan walā hum yunṣarūn)
"the day a master shall avail nothing a client, and they shall not be helped" (44:41);
50
ḥamdan yartafiʿu minnā ilā aʿlā ʿilliyyīn
a praise which will rise up from us to the highest of the 'Illiyun
51
fī kitābin marqūm yashhaduhu almuqarrabūn
"in a book inscribed, witnessed by those brought nigh" (83:20-21),
52
ḥamdān taqarru bihī ʿuyūnunā idhā bariqat al-abṣār
a praise whereby our eyes may be at rest when sight is dazzled,
53
wa tabyaddu bihi wujuhuna idha aswaddatil absharu
our faces whitened when skins are blackened,
54
ḥamdan nuʿtaqu bihī min ʾalīmi nār allāh
a praise through which we may be released from God's painful Fire
55
ilā karīmi jiwarillāh
and enter God's generous neighbourhood,
56
ḥamdan nuzāḥimu bihi malāʾikatahu al-muqarrabīn
a praise by which we may jostle the angels brought nigh
57
wa nuḍāmmu bihi anbiyā'ahul mursalīn
and join the prophets, the envoys,
58
fī dār al-muqāmah allatī lā tazūl
in a House of Permanence that does not remove,
59
wa mahallu karamatihi allati la tahulu
the Place of His Generosity that does not change.
60
wa al-ḥamdu li-llāhi allaḏī akhtāra lanā maḥāsin al-khalq
Praise belongs to God, who chose for us the good qualities of creation,
61
wa'ajraya ʿalayna ṭayyibāti ar-rizq
granted us the agreeable things of provision,
62
wa jaʿala lana al-faḍilah bil-malakah ʿala jamiʿi al-khalq
and appointed for us excellence through domination over all creation;
63
fakullu khalīqatihi munqādah lana bi qudratihi
every one of His creatures submits to us through His power
64
waṣāʾiratun ilā ṭāʿatinā biʿizzatihī
and comes to obey us through His might.
65
wa al-ḥamdu li-llāhi al-ladhī aghlaqa ʿannā bāba al-ḥājah illā ilayhi
Praise belongs to God, who locked for us the gate of need except toward Him.
66
fakayfa nuṭīqu ḥamdahu am matā nuaddī shukrahu? lā, matā?
So how can we praise Him? When can we thank Him? Indeed, when?
67
wa al-ḥamdulillāh alladhī rakkaba fīnā ālāti al-basṭi
Praise belongs to God, who placed within us the organs of expansion,
68
wa jaʿala lana adawati al-qabḍi
assigned for us the agents of contraction,
69
wa mattaʿana bi-arwāḥi al-ḥayāh
gave us to enjoy the spirits of life,
70
wa-athbata feenaa jawaarih al-a'maal
fixed within us the limbs of works,
71
wa-ghaḏḏānā bi-ṭayyibāt al-rizq
nourished us with the agreeable things of provision,
72
wa aghnana bi-fadlihi
freed us from need through His bounty,
73
wa aqnanā bi mannihi
and gave us possessions through His kindness.
74
thumma amarana liyakhtabira ta'atana
Then He commanded us that He might test our obedience
75
wa nahanā liyabtalīya shukranā fakhālafnā ʿan ṭarīqi amrihi
and prohibited us that He might try our thanksgiving. So we turned against the path of His commandments
76
wa rakibna mutūna zajrihi
and mounted the backs of His warnings.
77
falamma yabtadhirna bi-'uqubatihi wa-lam yu'ajilna bi-niqmatihi
Yet He hurried us not to His punishment, nor hastened us on to His vengeance, ,
78
bal tānānā bi-raḥmatihi takarrumān, wa-antazara murājaʿatanā bi-raʾfatihī ḥilmā
No, He went slowly with us through His mercy, in generosity, and awaited our return through His clemency, in mildness.
79
wa al-ḥamdu lillāh al-ladhī dallanā ʿalā al-tawbah
Praise belongs to God, who showed us the way to repentance,
80
allatī lam nufidhā illā min fadlihī
which we would not have won save through His bounty.
81
falaw lam naʿtadid min fadlihi
Had we nothing to count as His bounty
82
'illā bihāl-qad ḥasuna balā'uhu 'indanā
but this, His trial of us would have been good,
83
wa jalla iḥsānuhu ilaynā
His beneficence toward us great,
84
wa jasuma faḍluhu ʿalaynā
His bounty upon us immense.
85
famā hakaḏā kānat sunnatuhu fī at-tawba
For such was not His wont in repentance
86
liman kana qablanā
with those who went before us.
87
laqad waḍaʿa ʿannā
He has lifted up from us
88
mā lā ṭāqata lanā bih
"what we have not the strength to bear"(2:286) ,
89
walam yukallifna illa wusʿan
charged us only to our capacity,
90
wa lam yujashshimna illa yusraً
imposed upon us nothing but ease,
91
wa lam yadaʿ lāḥadan minnā ḥujjatan walā ʿudhran
and left none of us with an argument or excuse.
92
fala-hāliku minna man halaka ʿalayhi
So the perisher among us is he who perishes in spite of Him
93
wa al-saʿeedu minna man raghiba ilayhi
and the felicitous among us he who beseeches Him.
94
wa al-ḥamdu lillāhi bikulli mā ḥamidahu bihī
And praise belongs to God with all the praises of
95
adnaa malaa'ikatihi ilayhi
His angels closest to Him,
96
wa akramu khalīqatihi ʿalayhi
His creatures most noble in His eyes,
97
wa ardā ḥāmidīhi ladayhi
and His praisers most pleasing to Him;
98
ḥamdān yafḍulu sāʾira al-ḥamdi
a praise that may surpass other praises
99
kafadl rabbinā ʿalā jamiʿi khalqih
as our Lord surpasses all His creatures.
100
thumma lahu al-ḥamd
Then to Him belongs praise,
101
makāna kulli niʿmatin lahu ʿalaynā
in place of His every favour upon us
102
wa ʿala jamiʿi ʿibadihi al-madine wa al-baqine
and upon all His servants, past and still remaining,
103
ʿadada mā ʾaḥāṭa bihī ʿilmuhu min jamiʿi al-ashyāʾi
to the number of all things His knowledge encompasses,
104
wa makanat kulli wahidatin minha 'adaduha.
and in place of each of His favours,
105
'aḍʿāfan muḍā'afatan abadan sarmadan ilā yawm al-qiyāmah
their number doubling and redoubling always and forever, to the Day of Resurrection;
106
ḥamdan lā muntaḥā liḥaddihi
a praise whose bound has no utmost end,
107
wa la hisaba li'adadihi
whose number has no reckoning,
108
wa lā mablagha li-ghāyatihi
whose limit cannot be reached,
109
wa lā inqitaʿa lā madhīh
whose period cannot be cut off;
110
ḥamdān yakūnu wuṣlatan ilā ṭāʿatihī waʿafwihī
a praise which will become a link to His obedience and pardon,

waḏariʿatan ilā maghfiratih
a means to His forgiveness,

a help in fulfilling His right and His duties;
119
ḥamdan nasʿadu bihī fī al-suʿadāʾi min awliyāʾihi
a praise that will make us felicitous among His felicitous friends,
120
wa-naṣīru bihī fī naẓmi al-shuhadā'i bi-suyūfi a'adā'ihi
and bring us into the ranks of those martyred by the swords of His enemies.

ʾinnahu waliyyun ḥamīdun
He is a Friend, Praiseworthy!
