In Confessing Sins after Finishing the Night Prayer

1
allāhumma yā dhā al-mulki al-mutābbid bi-l-khulūdi wa-s-sulṭāni
O God, O Possessor of kingdom perpetual in everlastingness,
2
al-mumtaniiʿ bi-ghayri junuudin wa laa aʿwaan
authority invincible without armies or helpers,
3
wal-ʿizzil-bāqi ʿalā marrid-duhūr
might abiding through aeons past,
4
wa-khawālī al-aʿwām, wa-mawāḍī al-azmān wa-l-ayyām
years gone by, times and days elapsed!
5
ʿazzat sultānuka ʿizzan lā ḥadda lahū bi-awwaliyyatin walā muntaḥā lahū bi-ākhirīyyah
Thy authority is mighty with a might that knows no bound by being first nor utmost end by being last!
6
wa-istaʿlā mulkuka ʿulūwwan saqatatil-ashyāʾu dūna bulūghi amadihi
Thy kingdom towers high with a towering before which all things fall down without reaching its term;
7
walā yablughu adnā mā istaʾthartabihi min dhālika aqṣā naʿti al-naʿitīn
the least of it which Thou hast kept to Thyself is not reached by the furthest description of the describers!
8
ḍallaت fīka aṣ-ṣifātu wa tafasxat dūnaka an-nuʿūtu
Attributes go astray in Thee, descriptions fall apart below Thee,
9
waḥārat fī kibrīyā’ika laṭā’ifu al-awhām
the subtlest of imaginations are bewildered by Thy magnificence!
10
kaḏalika anta allāhu al-ʾawwalu fī ʾawwaliyyatika
So art Thou: God, the First in Thy firstness,
11
wa ʿalā dhālika anta dāʾimun lā tazūlu
and so art Thou everlastingly. Thou dost not pass away.
12
wa ana al-'abdu al-ḍaʿīfu ʿamalan al-jasīmu amalan
But I am the slave, feeble in works, immense in hopes.
13
kharajat min yadi asbabul wusulati illa ma wasalahu rahmatuk
The tying links are outside my hand, except what is tied by Thy mercy;
14
wa taqaṭṭaʿat ʿannī ʿiṣamu al-āmāl
the bonds of hopes have been cut away from me,
15
illā mā anā muʿtassimun bihī min ʿafwik
except the pardon to which I hold fast.
16
qalla ʿindi mā ʾaʿtaddu bihi min ṭāʿatika
Little on my part is the obedience toward Thee upon which I count,
17
wa kathura ʿalayya mā ʾabū'u bihī min maʿṣiyatika
and great against me the disobedience toward Thee to which I have reverted.
18
walay yaḍīqa ʿalayka ʿafwun ʿan ʿabdik, wa-in asāʾa faʿfu ʿannī
But pardoning Thy slave will not constrain Thee, even if he be bad, so pardon me!
19
allāhumma waqad ashrafa ʿalā khafāyā al-aʿmāli ʿilmuka
O God, Thy knowledge watches over hidden works
20
wa-ankashafa kullu mastoorin doona khubrika
every covered thing is exposed before Thy awareness,
21
walā tanṭawī ʿanka daqāʾiq al-umūr
the intricacies of things are not concealed from Thee,
22
walā taʿzubu ʿanka ghayyibātu al-sarāʾir
and unseen mysteries slip not away from Thee.
23
wa qad istaḥwaḏa ʿalayya ʿaduwwuka alladhi istanẓaraka li-ghiwayti fa-anẓarhtahu
But over me Thy enemy has gained mastery: He asked a delay from Thee to lead me astray, and Thou gavest him the delay!
24
wa astamhala-ka ila yawm al-deen, la-id-dal-li fa-am-hal-tahu
He asked a respite from Thee until the Day of Doom to misguide me, and Thou gavest him the respite!
25
fa-aqʿaani waqad harabtu ilayka
So he threw me down, though I had fled to Thee
26
min sagha'ir dhunubin mubiqah
from small, ruinous sins
27
wa kabāʾiri aʿmālin murdiyat
and great, deadly works,
28
ḥattā ʾiḏā qārafatu maʿṣiyataka
until, when I had yielded to disobeying Thee
29
and merited Thy anger through my bad efforts,
30
fa talā ʿannī ʿiḏāra ghadrihi
he turned the bridle of his treachery away from me,
31
wa talqānī bi kalimati kufrh
met me with the word of his ingratitude,
32
wa tawallā al-barā'ata minnī wa adbarra muwaliyāan 'anni
undertook to be quit of me, turned his back to flee from me,
33
fa-ʾaṣḥarnī li-ghaḍabika farīdan
threw me to the desert of Thy wrath alone,
34
wa-akhrajani ila fina'i naqimatika tariidan
and sent me as an outcast into the courtyard of Thy vengeance.
35
lā shafīʿun yašfaʿu lī ilayk
There is no intercessor to intercede for me with Thee,
36
wa lā khafīrun yu'minunī 'alayka
no protector to make me feel secure against Thee,
37
walā ḥiṣn yaḥjubunī ʿanka
no fortress to veil me from Thee,
38
walā malāẓun alja'u ilayhi minka
no shelter in which to seek asylum apart from Thee!
39
fa-ha-tha maqaamu al-ʿaa'iẓi bika, wa-ma-hal-lu al-muʿta-ri fi-laka
This is the station of him who takes refuge with Thee, the place of the confessor to Thee:
40
fala yaḍīqann ʿannī faḍluka, wa lā yaqṣuran dūnī ʿafwuka
Let not Thy bounty be too narrow for me, let not Thy pardon fall short of me!
41
wa lā akun akhyaba ʿibādika al-tāʾibīn
Let me not be the most disappointed of Thy repentant servants,
42
wala aqnaṭa wafuudika al-amileen
nor the most despairing of those who come to Thee with expectations!
43
wa-ghfir lī innaka khayru al-ghāfirīn
Forgive me, surely Thou art the best of the forgivers!
44
allāhumma innaka amartanī fataraktu, wa nahaytanī farakibtu
O God, Thou commanded me, and I refrained, Thou prohibited me, and I committed.
45
wa sawwala liya al-khata'a khatiru al-su'i fafarattu
evil thoughts tempted me to offend, and I was negligent.
46
wa lā astashhidu ʿalā ṣiyāmī nahāran
I cannot call upon daytime to witness my fasting,
47
wa lā astajīru bi-tahajjudī lailan
nor can I seek sanctuary in night because of my vigil;
48
wa lā tuṯnī ʿalayya bi-iḥyāʾihā sunnah
no Sunna praises me for keeping it alive,
49
ḥāshā furūḍika allatī man ḍayyaʿahā halaka
only Thy obligations, he who neglects which has perished.
50
wa lastu atawassalu ilayka bi fadli naafilah
I cannot seek access to Thee through the excellence of a supererogatory work,
51
maʿa kathīri mā aghfaltu min waẓāʾifi furūḍika
given the many duties of Thy obligations of which I have been heedless
52
wa ta`addaytu `an maqamat hududika
and the stations of Thy bounds which I have transgressed,
53
'ilā ḥurumāt intahaktuhā, wa kabā'ir dhunūb ijtarahtuhā
thereby violating sacred things and committing great sins,
54
kānat ʿāfiyatuka lī min faḍāʾiḥihā sitran
though Thou hast given me safety from their disgraces as a covering.
55
wa hadha maqamu mani stahyaa linafsihi minka
This is the station of him who is ashamed of himself before Thee,
56
wasakhita ʿalayha, waradiya ʿanka
angry with himself, and satisfied with Thee.
57
fatallaqāka binafs khāshiʿah, waraqabah khāḍiʿah, wadhahr muthqal minal-khataaya
He meets Thee with a humble soul, a neck bent down, a back heavy with offenses,
58
waqifan bayna al-raghbati ilayka wal-rahbati minka
hesitating between longing for Thee and fear of Thee.
59
wa-anta awwala man rajāh
Thou art the most worthy of those in whom he might hope,
60
wa-aḥaqquman khashiyaahu wa-ittaqahu
the most deserving for him to dread and fear.
61
faʿṭinī yā rabbi mā rajawtu wa āminnī mā ḥaḏirtu
So give me, my Lord, what I hope for, make me secure against what frightens me,
62
waʿud ʿalayya biʿā'idati raḥmatika innaka akramu al-mas'ūlīn
and act kindly toward me with the kindly act of mercy! Surely Thou art the most generous of those from whom are asked!
63
allāhumma wa-idh satartanī bi-ʿafwik wa-taghammadtanī bi-faḍlik
O God, since Thou hast covered me with Thy pardon and shielded me with Thy bounty
64
fī dār al-fanāʾ bi-ḥaḍrat al-akfāʾi
in the abode of annihilation and the presence of equals
65
faajirnii min fadiihati daaril baqaa'ِ
grant me sanctuary from the disgraces of the Abode of Subsistence
66
ʿinda mawāqifi al-ashhād min al-malā'ikati al-muqarrabīn
at the standing places of the Witnesses (the angels brought nigh,
67
wa al-rusuli al-mukarramīna wa al-shuhadā'i wa al-ṣāliḥīn
the messengers honoured, the martyrs, the righteous)
68
min jār kuntu ukātimuhu sayyi'ātī
before the neighbour from whom I have hidden my evil deeds
69
wa min dhī raḥim kuntu aḥtashimu minhu fī sarīrātī
and the womb relative before whom I feel ashamed in my secret thoughts!
70
lam athiq bihim rabbī fī as-sitr ʿalayya
I trust them not, my Lord, to cover me over,
71
wa wathiqtu bika rabbī fil-maghfirati lī
but I trust Thee, my Lord, to forgive me!
72
wa-anta awla man wuthiqa bihi wa-a'ta man rughiba ilayh
Thou art the most worthy of those in whom confidence is had, the most giving of those who are besought,
73
wa-arʾafu mani sturhimah farḥamni
and the most clement of those from whom mercy is asked. So have mercy upon me!
74
allāhumma wa anta ḥadar tanī mā’an mahīnan min ṣulbi
O God, Thou caused me to descend as mean water from loins
75
mutada'iq al-'izam harji al-masalik
of narrow bones and tight passages
76
'ila raḥim ḍayyiqaḥ satarthā bil-ḥujub
into a constricted womb which Thou hadst covered with veils;
77
tuṣarrifunī ḥālan ʿan ḥāl ḥattā antaḥayta bī ilā tamāmi al-ṣūrah
Thou turned me about from state to state until Thou tookest me to the completion of the form
78
wa'athbat fiyyal jawarih
and fixed within me the bodily parts,
79
kamā naʿatta fī kitābika
as Thou hast described in Thy Book:
80
nuṭfatan thumma ʿalaqatan thumma muḍghatan thumma ʿiẓaman
a drop, then a clot, then a tissue, then bones,
81
thumma kasawta al-'izama lahman, thumma ansha'tanee khalqan akhara kama shi'ta
then Thou garmented the bones with flesh, then Thou produced me as another creature as Thou willed (ref.23:12-14).
82
ḥattā ʾiḏa iḥtajtu ʾilā rizqika
Then, when I needed Thy provision,
83
walam astaghni 'an ghīāthi faḍlika
and could not do without the aid of Thy bounty,
84
jaʿalta ly quwwatan min faḍl ṭaʿām wa sharāb
Thou appointed for me a nourishment from the bounty of the food and drink
85
ajrāytahu lāimatikal-latī askanitanī jawfahā waawdaʿtanī qarāra raḥimihā
which Thou bestowed upon Thy handmaid in whose belly Thou gavest me to rest and in the lodging of whose womb Thou deposited me.
86
wa-law takilunī yā rabbī fī tilka al-ḥālāt ilá ḥawlī
Hadst Thou entrusted me in those states, my Lord, to my own force
87
aw taḍṭarrunī ilā qūwati
or driven me to have recourse to my own strength,
88
lakāna al-ḥawlu ʿannī muʿtazilān, wa lakānatil-quwwatu minnī baʿīdah
force would have been removed from me and strength taken far away.
89
faghadhawtani bifaḍlika ghiẓā'a al-barri al-laṭhīf
So Thou hast fed me through Thy bounty with the food of the Good, the Gentle;
90
tafʿalu dhālika bī taṭawwulan ʿalayya ilā ghāyatī hadhihi
Thou hast done that for me in graciousness toward me up to this my present point.
91
lā ʾaʿdamu birraka walā yubṭiʾu bī ḥusnu ṣanīʿika
I do not lack Thy goodness nor does Thy benefaction keep me waiting.
92
walā tataʾakkadu maʿa dhālika thiqa'tī
Yet with all that, my trust has not become firm enough
93
fa'atafarraġa limā huwa aḥẓā lī 'indaka
that I might free myself for that which is more favoured by Thee.
94
qad malaka al-shayṭān ʿinānī fī sūʾi al-ẓanni wa ḍaʿfi al-yaqīn
Satan has taken possession of my reins through my distrust and frail certainty.
95
fa ana ashku suu' mujaawaratihi li wa ta'ata nafsi lahu
I complain of his evil neighbourhood with me and my soul's obedience toward him!
96
wa-astaʿsimuka min malakatihi, wa-ataḍarracu ilayka fi ṣarfi kaydihi ʿanni
I ask Thee to preserve me against his domination, and I plead with Thee to turn his trickery away from me!
97
wa as'aluka fi an tusahhila ila rizqi sabilaً
I ask Thee to make the path to my provision easy,
98
falaka al-ḥamdu ʿalā ibtidāʾika bin-naʿami al-jisāmi
since to Thee belongs praise for Thy beginning with immense favours
99
wa'ilhāmika ash-shukra 'alā al-iḥsāni wal-in'ām
and Thy inspiring gratitude for beneficence and bestowing favour!

fasalli ʿala muḥammad wa ālihi
Bless Muhammad and his Household,
101
wasahhil ʿalayya rizqī wa-an tuqanniʿanī bi-taqdīrikalī.
and make the way to my provision easy for me! [I ask Thee] to make me content with Thy ordainment for me,
102
wa ʾan turḍiyani bi-ḥiṣṣatī fīmā qasamta lī
to make me satisfied with my lot in that which Thou hast apportioned for me
103
wa-an tajʿala ma dhahaba min jismi wa ʿumuri
and to place what has gone of my body and my life-span
104
fī sabīli ṭāʿatika innaka khayru al-rāziqīn
into the path of Thy obedience! Surely Thou art the Best of providers!
105
allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika man nār taghallaẓta bihā ʿalā man ʿaṣāka
O God, I seek refuge in Thee from the Fire through which Thou art harsh toward him who disobeys Thee
106
wa tawa'addta bihā man ṣadafa 'an riḍāk
and by which Thou hast threatened him who turns away from Thy good pleasure;
107
wa min naarin nooruhaa zulmataw wa hayyinuhaa aleemun, wa baeeduhaa qareebun
from the Fire whose light is darkness, whose ease is pain, and whose far is near;
108
from the Fire parts of which devour parts
109
wa yaṣūlu baʿḍuhā ʿalā baʿḍ
and parts of which leap upon parts;
110
wa min nārin taḏaru al-ʿiẓāma ramīmāً
from the Fire which leaves bones decayed
111
wa tasqī ahlahā ḥamīmān
and lets its people drink boiling water;
112
wa min naarin laa tubqee ʿalaa man taḍarraʿa ilayha
from the Fire which 'does not spare him who pleads to it,'
113
wa lā tarḥamu mani istaʿṭafahā
has no mercy on him who seeks sympathy from it,
114
walā taqdīru ʿalā at-takhfīfi ʿammān khashaʿa lahā wastaslama ilayhā
and has no power to relieve him who humbles himself before it and yields himself to it;
115
talqā sukkanahā bi'aḥarri mā ladayhā min ʾalīmi ʾn-nakāli wa shadīdi l-wabāli
it meets its inhabitants with the hottest that it possesses: painful punishment and intense noxiousness.
116
wa aʿūdhu bika min ʿaqāribiha al-fāghirati afwāhuhā
seek refuge in Thee from its gaping-jawed scorpions,
117
waḥayyātihā al-ṣāliqati bi'anyābihā
its scraping-toothed serpents,
118
wa sharābihā alladhī yuqattiu ʾamaʿāʾa wa ʾafʾidat sukkanihā, wa yanziʿu qulūbahum
and its drinks, which tear apart the intestines and hearts of its inhabitants and root out their marrows.
119
wa astahdīka limā bāʿada minhā wa akhkhara ʿanhā
I ask guidance from Thee to that which will keep far from it and make it retreat!
120
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,
121
wa-ajirnī minhā bifadl raḥmatika
grant me sanctuary from it through the bounty of Thy mercy,
122
wa-aqilni ʿatharati bi-ḥusni iqālatika
release me from my stumbles through Thy good releasing,
123
walā takhdhulnī yā khayral mujiyreen
and abandon me not, O Best of the sanctuary-granters!
124
allāhumma innaka taqī al-karīhata, wa tuʿtī al-ḥasanah
O God, Thou protectest from the disliked, givest the good,
125
wa tafʿalu ma turīdu wa anta ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīr
dost what Thou wilt, and Thou art "powerful over everything" (3:26).
126
allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālih, idhā dhukira al-abrār
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household when the pious are mentioned
127
waṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihi mā ikhtalafa allaylu wan-nahāru
and bless Muhammad and his Household as long as night and day come
128
ṣalātan lā yanqaṭiʿu madaduhā
and go with a blessing whose replenishment is never cut off
129
walā yuḥṣā ʿadaduhā ṣalātan tashḥanu al-hawā
and whose number cannot be counted, a blessing that will fill up the air
130
wa tamla al-ʾarḍa wa as-samaʾā.
and crowd the earth and the heaven!
131
ṣalla allāhu ʿalayhi ḥattá yarḍá
God bless him until he is well pleased
132
wa ṣalla allāhu ʿalayhi wa ālihi
and God bless him and his Household
133
baʿda al-riḍā ṣalātan lā ḥadda lahā
after good pleasure with a blessing that has neither bound
134
walā muntaḥā yā arḥama r-rāḥimīn
nor utmost limit! O Most Merciful of the merciful!
