His Supplication when Sick

1
allāhumma lakal-ḥamdu ʿalā mā lam azal atasarrafu fīhi min salāmati badanī
O God, to Thee belongs praise for the good health of my body which lets me move about,
2
walaka al-ḥamd ʿalā mā aḥdath-ta bī min ʿillah fī jasadī
and to Thee belongs praise, for the ailments which Thou causest to arise in my flesh!
3
famā ʾadrī yā ʾilāhī, ayyu al-ḥalayn aḥaqqu bilshukri lak
For I know not, my God, which of the two states deserves more my thanking Thee
4
wa ayyu alwaqatayni aula bi alhamdi laka
and which of the two times is more worthy for my praise of Thee:
5
awaktu al-ṣiḥḥat al-latī hannātinī fīhā ṭayyibāt rizqika
the time of health, within which Thou makest me delight in the agreeable things of Thy provision,
6
wa-naššaṭtanī bihā labtiġā'i marḍātika wa faḍlika
through which Thou givest me the joy to seek the means to Thy good pleasure and bounty,
7
waqawwaytanī maʿahā ʿalā mā waffaqtanī lahū min ṭāʿatika
and by which Thou strengthenest me for the acts of obedience which Thou hast given me success to accomplish;
8
am waqtu al-ʿillati al-latī maḥḥaṣtanī bihā
or the time of illness through which Thou puttest me to the test
9
wa al-niʿami allati athraftani biha
and bestowest upon me favours:
10
takhfīfan limā thaqula bihī ʿalā ẓahri minal-khaṭīʾāt
lightening of the offenses that weigh down my back,
11
wa-taṭhīrān limā inghamastu fīhi mina al-sayyi’āt
purification of the evil deeds into which I have plunged,
12
incitement to reach for repentance, reminder of the erasure of misdeeds through ancient favour;
13
wa fī khalāli dhālika mā kataba liya al-kātibān
and, through all that, what the two writers write for me:
14
min zakīy al-aʿmāl, mā lā qalbun fakkara fīh
blameless acts, which no heart had thought,
15
wala lisānun naṭaqabihi walā jāriḥatun takallafathu bal ifḍālan minka ʿalayya
no tongue had uttered, and no limb had undertaken, rather, as Thy bestowal of bounty upon me
16
wa-iḥsānan min ṣanīʿika ilayya
and the beneficence of Thy benefaction toward me.
17
allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammad wa ālihi
O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,
18
waḥabbib ilayya mā raḍīta lī
make me love what Thou hast approved for me,
19
wayassir li mā ahlalt biy
make easy for me what Thou hast sent down upon me,
20
wa ṭahhirnī min danasi mā aslaftu
purify me of the defilement of what I have sent ahead,
21
wa-amhu 'anni sharra ma qaddamtu
erase the evil of what I have done beforehand,
22
wa-awjednī ḥalāwata al-ʿāfiyah, wa-ʾaḏiqnī barda as-salāmah
let me find the sweetness of well-being, let me taste the coolness of safety,
23
waj'al makhrajī ʿan ʿil-latī ilā ʿafwik
and appoint for me a way out from my illness to Thy pardon,
24
wa mutaḥawwali ʿan ṣarʿatī ilā tajāwuzika
transformation of my infirmity into Thy forbearance,
25
wa khalaṣī min karbī ilā rūhika
escape from my distress to Thy refreshment,
26
wa-salāmatī min hādhīhi ash-shiddah ilá farajik
and safety from this hardship in Thy relief!
27
'innaka almutafadhdhilu bil'ihsani
Thou art gratuitously bountiful in beneficence,
28
al-mutaṭawwilu bil-imtināni, al-wahhābu al-karīmu
ever gracious in kindness, the Generous, the Giver,
29
dhū al-jalāli wal-ikrām
Possessor of majesty and munificence!
